Gentle Flow & Restorative Yoga

ABOUT

This 90-minute class will begin with a gentle vinyasa sequence and close with a relaxing and nourishing sequence of restoratives. The first portion of the class will offer students a gentle flow to bring awareness into the body and release tension. The second portion of the class will create space for deep relaxation through lengthy holds in restorative asanas.

“Restorative yoga is the use of props to create positions of ease and comfort that facilitate relaxation and health”

- Judith Hanson Lasater

Restorative yoga helps release unnecessary tension in the body and the mind. In this practice, we create conditions for conscious relaxation and practice the art of doing less. Restorative yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system— our nervous system’s “rest and digest” response. This neurological response promotes healing within the immune, digestive, and reproductive systems. This practice of stillness allows us to care for the whole of ourselves by supporting physical, mental, and emotional well being.

REGISTRATION DETAILS

  • The studio has bolsters, blankets, blocks, and yoga mats to support us during practice

  • Students are encouraged to wear loose and comfortable clothing to practice

  • You may choose to bring socks and an eye pillow to class to increase your comfort

Winter Solstice 108 Flow

Winter Solstice 108 Flow

ABOUT

The Winter Solstice is celebrated in cultures around the world as a symbol of death and rebirth—a time of new beginnings and fresh starts. Join me for the 2018 Winter Solstice and celebrate the approaching new year with mantra meditation and 108 sun salutations.

The practice of sun salutations allows us to build tapas, internal heat or fire, which is thought to cleanse and detoxify the body and mind. This powerful practice helps activate and move prana—life force or energy in the body and helps to release stagnant energy and emotions. The practice of 108 salutations will help us connect with our innate inner strength as we flow with our breath and surrender to the journey.

We will begin our practice by setting an intention, dedication, or a prayer for healing, followed by mantra meditation. Students are encouraged to bring their own set of mala beads to practice, however it is not absolutely necessary. Following mantra meditation, we will move into our practice of 108 sun salutations.

How to practice

  • Practice is best on an empty stomach. It is recommended to not eat at least 2 hours before practice. Hydrate well the evening before class and the morning of class.

  • Students are encouraged to divide the Yoga Mala into nine sets of twelve sun salutations for a total of 9 x 12 = 108 salutations.

  • Students are invited to try something a little different in each set — perhaps exploring variations of sun salutations or choosing a new intention.

  • You may choose to hold downward dog for 5 breaths every 6 salutations and 2 breaths for every other.

  • Students can move at their own pace with rest & meditation breaks permitted as needed.

  • If you are unable to complete your 108 Salutations, the numbers 27, 36 and 54 are also auspicious numbers and can provide a nice place to stop the practice.

ABOUT

This class will serve as a preview to the upcoming Balancing Yin and Yang retreat. Students who attend this free class will receive a special promotional discount with retreat sign up!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Yoga practice aims to re-establish our innate wholeness, our natural state of equilibrium. Ancient Chinese philosophy suggests that health and harmony are created when yin and yang aspects are in balance. When yin and yang are balanced, we return to the Dao - the center of tranquility. In this dynamic multi-layered yoga class, we will integrate both physical, movement-focused asana practices (Yang) with softer, more contemplative practices of being (Yin). This 60 minute class will begin with a series of deep stretch Yin Yoga postures to find stillness, calm the mind, and draw awareness into the physical body. After a grounding series of Yin postures, the practice will smoothly transition to a flow of dynamic Vinyasa yoga to build internal heat, strength, and mobility. The class will end with a return to stillness, leaving each individual feeling relaxed, invigorated, and refreshed. This is a free, all-levels yoga experience. Come as you are - all are welcome.
